This element handles primary fuel filtration and water separation on the engine's lift-pump side, protecting injectors and the high-pressure pump from contamination and emulsified moisture that build up in modern ULSD diesel. Clean fuel is the cheapest insurance on a TNV - a saturated separator passes water straight into the injection system, which leads to injector pitting, hard starts, and eventually a four-figure repair bill.

Replacement interval. Yanmar's general guidance is every 500 operating hours or 12 months, whichever comes first. In dusty, humid, or biodiesel-blend conditions, cut that in half. Always change the secondary spin-on at the same service.

Symptoms of a clogged or saturated separator. Loss of power under load, surging at high RPM, hard starts after sitting, smoke under acceleration, or water visible in the bowl. If the bowl is cloudy or the element looks tea-stained, swap it.

Installation tips. Pre-fill the new element with clean diesel before installing to minimize air bleed. Inspect and replace the O-rings supplied with the element. Prime the system per Yanmar's service procedure - most TNV engines have a hand primer on the lift pump. Run the engine at idle for 5 minutes and recheck the bowl for leaks and water.
