Hydraulic Hose Sizing Guide for Heavy Equipment

by AIM Rentals on Jun 08, 2026 Categories: Heavy Equipment Parts Blog

The four numbers you need before ordering a hose

  1. Inside diameter (ID): 1/4" up to 2" common. Match the existing hose or system spec.
  2. Working pressure: maximum continuous psi. SAE 100R1 handles 3,000 psi at 1/4", SAE 100R2 doubles that for the same ID.
  3. Length: measured fitting-to-fitting, end-of-thread to end-of-thread.
  4. End fittings: thread type (JIC, ORFS, NPT, BSPP, metric), male/female, angle (straight, 45, 90).

SAE hose spec cheat sheet

SAE Description Pressure 1/2" ID
100R1 1-wire braid 2,250 psi
100R2 2-wire braid 4,000 psi
100R12 4-spiral wire 4,000 psi (higher impulse)
100R15 6-spiral wire 6,000 psi
100R17 1 or 2 wire compact 3,000 psi (lower bend radius)

End fitting selection

  • JIC 37 degree: most common in North American mobile hydraulics
  • ORFS: O-ring face seal, preferred for new construction, leak-free
  • NPT: pipe thread, low-pressure auxiliary lines
  • Metric DIN 24: common on European and Asian equipment (Komatsu, Hyundai, Hitachi)
  • BSPP: British parallel pipe, often found on Hitachi and Doosan
