Hydraulic Hose Sizing Guide for Heavy Equipment
The four numbers you need before ordering a hose
- Inside diameter (ID): 1/4" up to 2" common. Match the existing hose or system spec.
- Working pressure: maximum continuous psi. SAE 100R1 handles 3,000 psi at 1/4", SAE 100R2 doubles that for the same ID.
- Length: measured fitting-to-fitting, end-of-thread to end-of-thread.
- End fittings: thread type (JIC, ORFS, NPT, BSPP, metric), male/female, angle (straight, 45, 90).
SAE hose spec cheat sheet
| SAE | Description | Pressure 1/2" ID |
|---|---|---|
| 100R1 | 1-wire braid | 2,250 psi |
| 100R2 | 2-wire braid | 4,000 psi |
| 100R12 | 4-spiral wire | 4,000 psi (higher impulse) |
| 100R15 | 6-spiral wire | 6,000 psi |
| 100R17 | 1 or 2 wire compact | 3,000 psi (lower bend radius) |
End fitting selection
- JIC 37 degree: most common in North American mobile hydraulics
- ORFS: O-ring face seal, preferred for new construction, leak-free
- NPT: pipe thread, low-pressure auxiliary lines
- Metric DIN 24: common on European and Asian equipment (Komatsu, Hyundai, Hitachi)
- BSPP: British parallel pipe, often found on Hitachi and Doosan
